<\/p>\nAsk any tourist what comes to mind when thinking of The Netherlands. Many of them will answer clogs, flowers and windmills for sure. It’s somewhat of a stereotype but hey, there is a reason behind them right? Well, sometimes it is fun to visit these clich\u00e9 type of places. As so, I decided to become a tourist in my own country and visit the Zaanse Schans. I have visited other touristy places in The Netherlands before but none of them beats the Zaanse Schans in terms of typical Dutch elements. Are you also curious about this traditional piece of Holland? Then these tips are for you!<\/p>\n
The Zaanse Schans is a historical area where people used to work and live in green little houses from the 18th and 19th century. Nowadays you can visit windmills and museums here. Some of the houses serve as shops and restaurants now however others still show how several crafts are made such as clogs, chocolate and cheese. It is also possible to do a little cruise on a\u00a0 boat around the windmills.<\/p>\n

The Zaanse Schans itself is still a residential area so you can walk around there freely but keep in mind that you still have to pay for most attractions. Every windmill costs at least \u20ac4,50 to get in and the museums also have their own entrance fee.<\/p>\n

Klompenmakerij is the attraction where you can see how clogs are made. They don’t charge an entrance fee and it is lots of fun to visit. A true must-see when visiting the Zaanse Schans!<\/p>\n

The Cacaolab is good news for all us chocolate lovers out there. Chocolate bars, hot cocoa, chocolate powder, everything that has to do with chocolate is sold here. You can also follow a workshop ‘Make your own chocolate’. My personal favorite? The Zaans Chocolade bar with 80% cocoa. A super delicious and healthier alternative for your sugar cravings.<\/p>\n

Having a drink at a terrace is fun and all but the food prices are rather expensive here. Are you visiting the Zaanse Schans on a nice sunny day? Just bring your own food then and hold a picknick!<\/p>\n
In case you visit the Zaanse Schans by car, keep in mind that there are parking costs as well. The best thing to do is to park a little up ahead and walk to the Zaanse Schans. Saves you a couple of euros for chocolate ?<\/p>\n

It is a huge hit on Instagram: the Inntel hotel with several layers of Dutch houses. I thought this would be next to the Zaanse but it was a little further than I imagined. This is about seven kilometres away in the city center of Zaandam. With the car you’ll be there in ten minutes and I saw there are good bus connections as well.<\/p>\n

Visiting address is Schansend 7 in Zaandam. The opening hours depend on what attraction you want to see but there is always something fun to do at the Zaanse Schans between 8 AM and 6 PM.<\/p>\n
